Veeam Data Cloud Vault was designed to simplify the 3-2-1 rule by performing off-site backup in the provider's cloud. It is not just an immutable repository — it is a service fully integrated with Veeam Data Cloud.
Because of this, enabling immutability for backup copies is simple and fast. All you need to do is configure a "backup copy" job targeting the Veeam Vault repository — once the transfer succeeds, your data is safe and protected not only against malware encryption, but also against accidental deletion by an administrator.

Compatibility and setup
Can I use Veeam Data Cloud Vault if my backup system is CommVault?
Unfortunately not. The service was designed for off-site backups for Veeam applications, including: Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Kasten for Kubernetes.
Can Veeam Vault be a backup repository for Veeam Agent?
Not for now. Veeam Data Cloud Vault cannot be used as a repository for Veeam Agent for Windows/Linux/Mac. Veeam Vault was designed to work with Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam Kasten.
Can VDC Vault Archive be the target backup repository for a backup copy job?
A backup copy job, meaning a secondary destination, can be pointed at a Veeam Data Cloud Vault Foundation or Advanced repository.
Using Veeam Vault Archive, however, requires a Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR) configured in Veeam Backup & Replication. On top of that, every tier has to be added, starting with the Performance Tier, through the Capacity Tier (Object Storage) and finally the Archive Tier, which is where the Veeam Vault Archive repository can be attached.
Can I choose the repository location when ordering?
Absolutely yes. During the first contact after ordering the service we jointly decide on the best region / country and whether the repository should run on Azure or AWS.
Important: the repository location cannot be changed after the service is provisioned.
Data security
Are backups stored in Veeam Data Cloud Vault immutable?
Yes. Backups transferred into the Vault service are immutable by default, according to parameters defined by your GFS policy. Moreover, the immutability period cannot be changed, so it is essential to design backup jobs carefully so you don't burn through your subscription capacity too quickly.
Our data must be confidential. What about encryption?
Backups are encrypted in transit to the VDC Vault repository. Encryption of backup jobs with a 256-bit AES key must be enabled inside Veeam Backup & Replication / Veeam Kasten.
Tiers and service scope
What is included in the Vault service?
The service consists of cloud object storage, a service portal and data transfers (API calls). The billing unit is every started TB of repository. Data transfers in the Advanced tier are unlimited; in Foundation, free egress covers up to 20% of the ordered capacity per month; in the Archive tier restores are billed separately based on actual usage (subject to the terms of service).
How does Vault Archive differ from the Foundation and Advanced tiers?
Archive is an archival tier that is cheaper to store but slower and billed differently. It was built for data you rarely reach for: GFS backups, long retention mandated by regulation, and cold data ageing off production storage. You could say Vault Archive is a substitute for a tape library.
Three practical differences worth knowing before you order:
- Restore time is over 15 hours, instead of the near-instant access of Foundation and Advanced. Archive is not suited to day-to-day restores.
- Minimum retention of 180 days, meaning data placed in Archive is kept there for at least six months, which is why the shortest available billing period is also six months.
- Restores are billed separately, so no free egress allowance is included in the price.
Archive does not replace Foundation or Advanced but usually runs alongside them, as the place older restore points move to over time.
Are there other options for immutable backups?
Yes. There are more options. For example, you can use bulk object storage (S3 Object Storage) from one of the cloud providers, or Veeam Cloud Connect, or invest in your own backup repository based on Scality ARTESCA or Veeam Hardened Repository. Read more »»»
Billing and costs
How much does restoring data from the Archive tier cost?
Restores from Archive are billed on actual usage at PLN 100 net per every started 200 GB of retrieved data. The calculator does not include this item, because its size depends on how much data you actually restore.
The charge is billed in arrears: at the end of the billing period in which the restore took place, it appears on the invoice for that period. Foundation and Advanced have no such item: Foundation includes a free allowance of 20% of capacity per month, and Advanced offers unlimited restores.
How are restores from Vault Archive billed?
At the end of the billing period we send you a summary of how much data was retrieved. The invoice is prepared on that basis.
You do not have to wait for it: transfers and current archive usage can be checked yourself, at any time, in the Veeam Vault service portal.
Can Veeam Data Cloud Vault be billed month-to-month?
Yes. For Vault Foundation and Advanced there are 4 billing periods to choose from: monthly, quarterly, half-yearly and annually; for Vault Archive: half-yearly, annually, two-year and three-year. The longer the period, the bigger the discount from the list price.
