Scality ARTESCA
Immutable object storage resilient to ransomware and human error with a protection guarantee, under your control.
What is Scality ARTESCA?
S3 object storage with usable capacity from 50 TB to 8.5 PB. One solution you can deploy in several roles and models.
Immutable repository
Backups with S3 Object Lock — protection against ransomware and accidental deletion.
Replication target
An additional target for VM, Microsoft 365 and container (Kasten) backups.
Application compatibility
A backup repository compatible with Veeam, Rubrik, Commvault, Splunk, Veritas, Cohesity and Zerto.
What sets ARTESCA apart as a backup target?
Data immutability
S3 Object Lock with Governance and Compliance modes.
End-to-end encryption
HTTPS/SSL connections and data-at-rest encryption (AES-256).
Data sovereignty
Your data stays in your own infrastructure, with full control over access, retention and compliance.
Hardened OS
A hardened operating system that minimises the attack surface.
Storage reliability
Thanks to erasure coding, rebuilding the data volume after replacing a failed disk takes hours, not days.
4 ARTESCA deployment models
Scality ARTESCA gives you great flexibility in choosing the deployment model to match your needs.
ARTESCA Software Appliance
The most popular and flexible option — ARTESCA software installed on dedicated hardware. 1-, 3- or 6-node configurations. A hardened operating system managed and updated by Scality.
ARTESCA+ Veeam all-in-one
Object Storage and Veeam Backup & Replication on a single appliance, increasing resilience to cyberattacks and ransomware and shortening RTO by greatly simplifying recovery scenarios.
Hardware Appliance for Veeam
A ready-made appliance with ARTESCA preinstalled, configured for Veeam Backup & Replication v12/13, Backup for M365 or Kasten. One support number, up and running in less than an hour from unboxing.
Virtual Appliance (VMware)
S3 Object Storage directly in a VMware vSphere environment. A ready-made virtual machine in OVA format. Deploy as 1 VM or a 3-node cluster on VMware ESXi. Note: maximum usable capacity ~109 TB (1 node) or ~218 TB (3 nodes).
Scality ARTESCA hardware requirements
Scality ARTESCA storage has specific hardware requirements that stem from the architecture and the technology used. The key factors are the size of the repository and the level of storage reliability (the number of disks and nodes).
Below are examples of minimum server / VM configurations for ~110 TB of usable capacity. Fault tolerance is provided by erasure coding - in this example up to 2 disks, on the loss of which the system remains operational (it retains the ability to write and read data).
ARTESCA Software Appliance Required hardware configuration (example)
Erasure Coding 8+2 · tolerates the loss of 2 disks
ARTESCA+ Veeam all-in-one Required hardware configuration (example)
Erasure Coding 8+2 · tolerates the loss of 2 disks
Virtual Appliance (VMware) Required vSphere VM resources (example)
Erasure Coding 8+2 · tolerates the loss of 2 disks
Indicative values based on the vendor's sizing tool. The final hardware configuration is determined individually for the requested usable capacity and reliability level.

Questions and answers
Frequently asked questions about Scality ARTESCA — immutability, compatibility, hardware requirements, vendor support and the billing model.
How is the immutability of data stored on Scality ARTESCA achieved?
When configuring a bucket in the ARTESCA web interface, enable versioning and then S3 Object Lock in Compliance mode. Once a backup is written, objects are protected from deletion and modification for the period defined in the retention policy, regardless of administrator privileges.
Which systems can I connect to Scality ARTESCA?
Scality ARTESCA communicates exclusively via the S3 API, so it works with any system that supports this protocol, regardless of how the object storage is connected. The solution is tested and validated with leading enterprise applications, including Veeam, Commvault, Rubrik, Zerto, Veritas, Cohesity, Elasticsearch, Kasten K10, CTERA and Splunk.
Will Scality ARTESCA run on any hardware?
Scality has specific hardware requirements, and subscription activation is preceded by a configuration validation performed by a Scality partner using the ARTESCA Simple Sizer tool. Example configurations are available here »»». If you want to check whether your hardware is suitable for building ARTESCA-based object storage, send us your configuration via this form »»».
How is vendor technical support delivered?
The first point of contact is the Scality partner, who — together with the vendor's support — resolves technical issues related to product malfunctions. Depending on the contract terms, the partner may also perform quarterly (mandatory to retain support) ARTESCA updates and administrative work.
Can the ARTESCA subscription be billed month to month?
Yes. There are 4 billing periods to choose from: monthly, semi-annual, annual and every two years. The longer the period, the larger the discount off the base price. Note: subscription offers shorter than a year apply only to Scality ARTESCA products dedicated to Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Kasten and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.
Can Scality ARTESCA act as both object storage and a backup server at the same time?
Yes. Specifically for Veeam backup, the ARTESCA+ edition is available, which runs the Veeam Backup & Replication server directly inside the ARTESCA environment (thanks to built-in KubeVirt virtualization). A single appliance then serves as both the backup server and storage — without investing in separate hardware infrastructure.
